Guinness World Record
By Kate Slater | 21 June 2012

Thanks to courage, stamina, determination and numerous rolls of Kinesio Taping, a new world record was achieved in Durham on Friday 8 June 2012 when 22 girls from Durham University played netball non-stop for 72 hours.

Previously the Guinness World Record for non-stop netball was 61 hours and was held by Netball Alberta in Canada.

The Durham students began their marathon game at Durham University?s Graham Sports Centre at 12 noon on Tuesday 5 June and played solidly for three days and three nights until 12 noon on Friday 8 June.

Free Kinesio Taping to help muscle fatigue and pain was applied on the side of the court each day by Kinesio qualified sports physiotherapists from The Performance Clinic. The tired girls queued up during their time off court for the relief that the brightly coloured, elastic taping offered their aching limbs.

Maxime Rowson, 19, a second year law student who organised the marathon netball event said: ?We?re so happy that we?ve made a new world record. Even now I can?t believe it! It was hard going, especially towards the end with the lack of sleep and physical exhaustion. Although we all enjoy netball, it was quite an ordeal to play for so long. It helped a lot that Kinesio Taping supplied us with free Kinesio Tape and a trained physiotherapist to apply the tape over the muscles that hurt - and believe me, most of them did after 72 hours! The tape helped to ease the pain yet we were still able to move around the court without any restriction.?

As well as breaking a world record, the students raised over £5000 to be split between Help for Heroes, (50%) Team Durham Sport in Action Zambia (25%) and Durham University Netball Club (25%)

Adjudicators and witnesses monitored every second of the 72 hour long match and formal notes were sent to Guinness World Records as soon as the event was declared closed.

Kevin Anderson, Managing Director of Kinesio Taping UK whose UK head office is based at Cobalt Business Park in North Tyneside said: ?It was great to see a group of young people so motivated and focused on such a daunting task ? and for such a good cause. The energy and enthusiasm of these girls during this marathon event was phenomenal and we were delighted to help them out with Kinesio Taping. No sportsman or woman should be ever without it!?
